When Baltimore finally got one more chance, they needed a TD instead of a FG and QB Joe Flacco threw an interception in crunch time, ending any chance at pulling out a win at 4-2, the Ravens fall into a second place tie with the Cincinnati Bengals, a game behind the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. The book, titled “Sweetness: The Enigmatic Life of Walter Payton,” is the 2 and a half year project of Jeff Pearlman, a former “Sports Illustrated” senior writer, who claims to have interviewed nearly 700 hundred people during its making. In an excerpt from the book over at SI.com, Pearlman details Payton’s addiction to pain meds, writing: The burden of loneliness and his marriage were not Payton’s only troubles. As a player he had numbed his maladies with pills and liquids, usually supplied by the Bears. Payton popped Darvon robotically during his playing days, says [his agent Bud] Holmes, ‘I would see him walk out of the locker room with jars of painkillers, and he had eat them like they were a snack,’ and also lathered his body with dimethyl sulfoxide, a topical analgesic generally used to treat horses. Now that he was retired, the self-medicating only intensified.” Walter was pounding his body with medication,” Holmes said. “I wish I knew how bad it was, but at the time I actually did not. According to the book, in 1988 Payton visited dentist offices complaining of tooth pain. He secured a lot of prescriptions for morphine but raised red flags with at least one pharmacist, who called police. Payton was visited by officers but accepted only a warning. Rob Ryan has the defensive unit playing out of their minds that was championship caliber defense tonight. BYU Football: Cougars Beat Central Florida: Cody Hoffman returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown and three forced BYU turnover in a 24-17 victory over Central Florida on Friday night. 6-yard TD run Bryan Kariya 10:29 left gave BYU a lead of 24-17 and the Cougars beat a last-minute drive of the Knights. David Nelson carries on To Fly below The Radar: On the heels of Buffalo’s impressive 34 point shellacking of Kansas City this past Sunday, praise has been flying in on the Bills from a national perspective a welcomed change of course for their fans. For the most part it’s the usual suspects cashing in on the admiration.  ESPN analyst Merril Hoge labeled Ryan Fitzpatrick as the most underrated quarterback in the entire league.  Stevie Johnson’s acrobatic touchdown clip has been showed countless times on NFL Network, while Fred Jackson gave new meaning to the term “beast mode” and Marcell Dareus already is receiving credit for the Bills’ revamped defense. Meanwhile, wide receiver David Nelson quietly continues to fly under the radar, which probably suits him just fine.  Lost among the hype of Buffalo’s demolition in Kansas City was a fine performance by the second-year undrafted free agent.  Nelson caught four passes for 66 yards, tying Johnson for most on the team.  One of Nelson’s grabs went for 35 yards and for the day averaged 16.5 yards per catch with two going for important, chain-moving first downs. For those thinking Nelson’s fine day was a flash in the pan, you may need to think again.  Head coach Chan Gailey has a well-defined role for him in the offense and Fitzpatrick is showing a load of confidence that Nelson can consistently make plays. Until Donald Jones can prove himself as a legitimate number two receiver, teams will start rolling coverage geared towards slowing down Johnson.  This gives Nelson, usually lined up in the slot; favorable matchups along the intermediate part of the field and along with tight end Scott Chandler, Fitzpatrick will look to exploit the mismatches as often as possible. Nelson was a pleasant surprise as a rookie last year, catching 31 passes for 353 yards and three touchdowns.  Based on what we saw Sunday, he could significantly improve those numbers in his sophomore campaign. • Green Bay Packers At Panthers:I'm a little nervous about this game should be. Green Bay Packers opened the season with perhaps the best attack. Football Outsiders called the one week at No. 1 in overall performance "with the Patriots in a close second." They travel to Carolina to face a defense that was torched by the Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb and the opening of his season, and you just lost one of their best players on defense. Plus it should be sweet to September 1, which only helps Aaron Rodgers accuracy and timing with his receivers. They scored 42 points last week against the Saints “well, only 35 on offense”, and there's no reason they can't have a repeat performance. What's got me so nervous is the injury to CB Tramon Williams. He's listed as questionable, but he hasn't practiced all week so he's obviously hurting. I think I'd rather see anyone other than CB Jarrett Bush replace him, but it's assumed he's the replacement and I'd be surprised if it was anyone else. Ty Dunne wrote that Bush "made plays throughout training camp" but he looked just as lost in coverage as usual during this preseason's games. Maybe Dunne was talking about practice. Even with Williams last week, the Packers defense was ripped apart by QB Drew Brees and the Saints receivers. QB Cam Newton did a great job against the Cardinals on deep passes to WR Steve Smith and his tight ends, which is the main area I expect to see Jarrett Bush covering. He's giving me flash backs of a disastrous game in 2009 when the Steelers torched the Packers secondary. QB Ben Roethlisberger threw for over 500 yards, and his first pass of the game was a 60 yard touchdown pass against Jarrett Bush in coverage. The big difference between last week, and that game in 2009, was that Newton is no Brees or Roethlisberger yet. His only NFL game was against the Cardinals and their suspect pass defense. And the Packers struggles on defense last week came against one of the best players in the NFL. The defense will rebound, Newton not to throw over 400 yards every week, and everything will be OK. This is the most likely scenario, although my nerve warns me of danger. Even with Newton on the fire, the Panthers scored 21 points last week. Both may have to move out to linebacker at the next level, especially Lewis. There are also a few cornerbacks to watch in this game. Florida State's Xavier Rhodes was mentioned plenty, but the Seminoles pass defense may be dependent on the play of Greg Reid. He had a lot of trouble in this game last season. For Oklahoma, the back corner Jamell Fleming is worth much less. He is more than a penny in the corner to the next level. Rosters are set to drastically shrink in the coming weeks, and before you know it the regular season will be here. For Detroit Lions fans, these are the key dates over the next two weeks to mark down on your calendar: Saturday, Aug. 27: The Lions will take on the New England Patriots at 8 p.m. on CBS. Starters are expected to get extended playing time in what will be considered a dress rehearsal for the regular season. Tuesday, Aug. 30: Teams are required to be down to 80 players on their roster by 4 p.m. “ET". In general, the first round of cuts alignment requires that teams have a maximum of only 75 players, but the NFL has 80 this year, there are currently 90 players on the lists. Thursday, September 1: The Lions begin their final preseason Buffalo Bills at 18:30 “ET”. Starters will play either very little or not at all since this game is more for the backups fighting to make a spot on the team. Saturday, Sept. 3: The final round of NFL roster cuts will commence.
